These pets are going to die. Look at their faces

The site that guilt trips you in to getting a dog by telling you it will die if you don’t. Dogsindanger.com the site refers to the fact that “Over four million dogs are killed each year in shelters” is a “National tragedy”. I would love to know how many homeless people die each year. The site shows you pictures and the date a dogs is set to be euthanized in order to “Put the truth in front of the consumer”. Am I just crazy or should less resources be put in to saving dogs lives and more resources be put in to saving peoples lives?

Google continues world domination

“Google is planning to expand its staff by a third, with most of the new hirings in Europe” and now with the USA firmly in its clutches Google turns its eye toward the east.

“The Web search company plans to hire several thousand engineers in Europe to create a research-and-development team” more like a research on how-to-take-over-Europe team. There putting satellites in the sky people. Russia did that and we freaked out (Sputnik). But Google dose it and even takes picture of our own back yards and its all cool. “We love you Google, we love you.” Its only a matter of time until we our all saying “We will do your biding unquestionably Google, what is it that you ask of us?”

New ipod is bigger + keyboard and mouse

The new Ipod "One" pretty much looks like a giant ipod without a clickwheel. The coolest part is that it comes with a wireless keyboard, mouse, and remote and chances are the battery last a whole lot longer. This new ipod clearly is just a means to make more money off of accesories. Just imagine how much more they could charge for a 19" ipod arm band compared to a 2" ipod arm band. Im sure the release of a wireless clickwheel is inevitable. The only question left to ask: Is the battery user replaceable?

fon: wifi for everyone (who has fon)

"fon" is a network of people who have special fon wifi routers that allow any one with a fon account to use your internet connection like a hot spot. The good thing about fon is that it is free...as long as you buy the $40 wifi router. The bad thing is that it cost 40 bucks. In its current state it probably isn't the best way to pick up wifi around town, but the more people that install a router, the better the service gets. Just imagine if one person every square mile had a fon router. any where you went you could be sure to be close to a hot spot. Thier web site even has a map that shows were in your town fon hotspots are located. It's worth checking out if the phrase "wifi everywhere" gives you the chills. The point is, you should sign up and then tell all your friends about it so that more people have hot spots. Basically I want free wifi everywhere and this is one way it could happen.

p.s. if you really get chills from that, check out hsdpa or wimax on wikipedia.

Velociraptors Redux

Click image for full view - from xkcd
We all realize the how important and awesome raptors are. We all love, but at the same time, fear and respect them. To the left I have another comic that gives us some insight to the mathematical principles that we ought to think of in every day life, just in case we have an unlikely and unfortunate meeting with such creatures of majesty, beauty, and superior intelligence.

Also, I made references in the last post in regards to a Doctorate's fanmail to the xkcd writer. It is definitely worth a read and to share. I think we all would do good to follow his instruction; you never can be too safe.

In closing I will leave you with another comic from the wonderful world of xkcd; probably the one of the only places I know of online that is obsessed with raptors and able to make it funny.

.22 Bullets Tearing Things Apart

These are some cool pictures I found on Digg called Crayon Assassin. Someone shooting a .22 through things and taking pictures with a nice camera. The guys Flickr account is linked at the bottom. He has some other cool photography on there too.

This is one of my favorite shots. Some awesome photography and marksmanship all in one!

Here are two shots of a rose getting... shot.

This is a pear that was shot by a modified .22 round. I assume since it was mentioned that this was a modified round the other ones were normal.

DARPA: Shotgun/Airdrop Deployed ad hoc camera system

What if your 12 gauge could fire mini-cameras, instead of buckshot? The question crossed Pentagon-funded researchers' minds, as they looked for a new way for the military to keep watch over cities.

This is pretty cool! They are creating cameras that can withstand being shot out of a shotgun and getting stuck to a wall and then they can set up an ad hoc network themselves. It can then be access by a computer off the shelves with a PCMCIA slot. They have tested them

Here are some more excerpts from Wired: Danger Room

After a few years in development, Defense News reports, the first of these eyes from the ELASTIC ("Expendable Local Area Sensors in a Tactically Interconnected Cluster") program are now being rolled out. And some of them are surprisingly rugged -- rugged enough to get shot.
...
“One thing we briefly looked at was delivering an image sensor by bullet,” Cormack said. “The bullet would be designed to decelerate the sensor on impact [by crushing], and leave the camera stuck to a wall, say, by a spike. It’s kind of mind-boggling to imagine setting up a sensor net by machine gun.”
...
The Israeli military experimented with a similar concept a while back -- except the Sabras' camera was grenade-sized. Air Force-backed contractors are examining sensors that can follow bullets in mid-flight.

So they have already tested these impacting at terminal velocity. They should be able to be shot into the wall with a spike that would hold it there without destroying the camera and give them eyes before they go around a corner. Follow this link and check it all out, it is pretty exciting, for me at least. You have to subscribe to Defense News to read the original post so good luck there.

Velociraptors

We all love Velociraptors. I wanted to be the first one to post something on our most beloved raptors. Of course we all know that the only reason any of us really watch the Jurassic Park movies is to see the Velociraptors in action. Of course we all dream about being a raptor and jumping onto somebodies back and digging our big opposable claw into their neck and just letting the blood flow. It is blatantly obvious that we all wish that we were a Velociraptor in our last life; or maybe become one in the next.

I love raptors. I think they look cool. I think their entire concept is rad!! However, like I believe Nate has mentioned before, raptors aren't large like Jurassic Park makes them out to be. Which is good, I'm not always going to have a super-soaker filled with Concord Grape Juice [preferably fresh squeezed] to protect me from the theoretical attack of a Velociraptor. According to Wikipedia they are only about .5m (1.6ft) tall. That is pretty small. Still scary though.

I love them so much, though, that I am going to share a couple quick comics with you.

R2-D2 Salt and Pepper Shakers

This is one for Eric, Seth, and anyone else who likes Star Wars, so me too haha. These are some cool salt and pepper shakers. I guess they aren't really shakers as much as grinders which is even better! Especially if you want your potatoes to be crapped on by R2-D2. I guess the black one is named R2-Q5, his part was a lot smaller in the movies.
